(Selden, NY) The Men's Tennis Team traveled to Suffolk Community College to take on the Fashion Institute of Technology on Saturday. After the Suffolk match was postponed the week before, the Lions were anxious to get back on the courts to play their second match of the 2018 season, especially in the beautiful weather.
Kicking off the singles matches was
Angel Lugo. Because of his ability to add incredible variation to his game, Lugo dominated within the first few minutes. He used his strong serve, quick approaches to the net, and his cunning drop shots off the court to take the victory over his opponent in just 2 games, 6-1, 6-3.
Next up was Co-Captain
Matthew Kolkhorst who controlled the court with ease. His deep cross court shots were too much for the FIT Tigers to handle, and he took the win handily 6-1, 6-0. The other Co-Captain,
Akbar Hasan, also had an excellent match. There were a few long points he had to fight for, but Hasan managed to convert most of them into his favor. He pulled out a win 6-0, 6-1.
6'2" Freshman
Sean Althaus used his height to his advantage at the net and trumped his opponent with a number of aces. He didn't give up a single point and finished 6-0, 6-0. Rounding out the rest of the singles was Sophomore
Brett Cohn . Cohn is a steady player who kept it calm cool and collected as his opponent struggled with his cross court backhand. He was victorious, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, the first match was Kolkhorst and Lugo. The two did a great job of playing to each others strengths. Kolkhorst hung back and sent line drive shots deep into the Tigers territory, while Lugo stepped up to the net to hit surprise drop shots that FIT could never recover. They took the win 8-0.
Next up were Hasan and
Jack Chen. They brought the heat from the beginning with Chen hitting several aces, and Hasan hitting the ball steady and deep to overpower his opponents. They added another win to the Lions list of victories for the day by finishing 8-1.
In the end, NCC trumped FIT 9-0.
You can catch the Lions back in action on Thursday against Suffolk Community College at home on the Eisenhower Park Tennis Courts.
