(Dryden, NY) On Friday night, the women's soccer team suited up for the Final Four round of the National Championships against #2 ranked Delta College. This was their first Final Four birth in school history.
From the beginning, the Lions didn't sit and wait for Delta to make moves. They were aggressive with the Pioneers defense and made multiple shots aimed for the back of the net. Only 3 minutes into the game, Shonogh Cleary charged the goal and beat her defender, giving her an open shot on goal. Her kick went straight to the back corner and put the Lions in the lead, 1-0. Not even 10 minutes later, the Pioneers managed to sneak one through Nassau's defense and tie the score, 1-1. The game remained scoreless, even after the teams came back from halftime. It was a tight game, with a decent amount of shots on goal, but neither team could tip the score in their favor.Â
With a tie at the end of regulation, the Lions found themselves in overtime and penalty kicks for a second time. Nassau went 5-2 in penalty kicks to barely miss the victory that would have advanced them to the National Championship game.Â
Shonogh Cleary and Fanny Mattison were both named to the All-Tournament Team, while Goalie
Bridget Triessl finished 4th in the country for number of shutouts in a season.
"I am extremely proud of this team. We could taste the victory, but in another close game, we fell just a little short. Delta showed a lot of class, grit and character throughout this game and the season. We will be back next year ready for more." Head Coach
Chris Megaloudis commented.
The Lions finish their historic 2019 season 14-3-3 overall and undefeated in the Region XV conference.
