Nassau Community College men's soccer used a dominant second-half performance to defeat Sussex County Community College 4-0 on August 27th at Nassau. After controlling possession and generating opportunities throughout a scoreless first half, the Lions broke through with four goals over the final 20 minutes to secure the win in the season opener. Nassau's patience paid off after controlling much of the match without finding the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes. The Lions continued to generate opportunities after halftime before Gonzalez's goal finally broke the deadlock and sparked a four-goal finish.
How It Happened
Nassau controlled the action from the opening whistle, creating several early chances and keeping Sussex under pressure. The Lions earned three corner kicks within the opening 10 minutes, while Ismael Garcia generated a pair of shots in the early going. Edgar Velazquez added three first-half attempts as Nassau continued to search for the opening goal.Â
Despite Nassau's consistent pressure, Sussex goalkeeper Gabriel Reast kept the game scoreless. Garcia put an attempt on target in the 42nd minute that Reast saved before sending another shot high two minutes later. Nassau entered halftime tied 0-0 despite holding a 9-0 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.Â
The Lions remained patient in the second half and finally broke through in the 71st minute. Garcia helped create the opener, finding Andy Gonzalez for the game's first goal at 70:56 to give Nassau a 1-0 advantage.Â
Garcia continued to create problems for the Sussex defense and helped double the lead less than nine minutes later. After Nassau earned a corner kick at 79:38, Benjamin Perez scored just one second later off Garcia's second assist of the match, putting the Lions ahead 2-0.Â
Nassau then put the match away with two goals just 30 seconds apart. At 83:30, Mohamed Alsayedi had an initial attempt saved by Reast before finding the back of the net off an assist from Raymond Zavala to make it 3-0. Garcia followed at 84:00, scoring his first goal of the match off an assist from Cristhian Ramos Monsalve to complete a four-goal second half and give Nassau a 4-0 lead.Â
Sussex finally generated some pressure in the closing minutes, but goalkeeper Herley Jean preserved the shutout with saves in the 85th and 87th minutes. Nassau finished with a 16-4 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
