When it comes to lightning and thunderstorms,
NO PLACE OUTSIDE is safe. The following alerts are a general outline of what to look out for and what to do during practices and games during a thunderstorm according to the NATA position statement for Lightning:

Due to the locations of NCC’s practices and games, a more conservative approach will be taken depending on where the field is and how close it is to shelter. During practices and games at Mitchell Field, safety procedures will begin lightning has been detected within 10 miles. All personnel will head immediately to the building adjacent to the turf field.
STAY AWAY FROM THE METAL BLEACHERS. This also goes for any team on the baseball and softball fields.
If there are any teams practicing on the Quad, safety procedures will begin within 15 miles from the field. They will be instructed to head to the P building as soon as possible. Activities will only resume after lightning or the roar of thunder has not been detected at
15 miles for 30 minutes.
