Nassau Women's Basketball Pulls Big Win Over Dutchess Community College

(Poughkeepsie, NY) The Nassau Women's Basketball Team hit the road to take on the Dutchess Falcons last Saturday.

Dutchess started out strong, but the Lions didn't let them rule for long. By the end of the first quarter the Lions were leading 18-15. NCC played tough defense holding the Falcons to scoring only single digits in each quarter for the rest of the game. At halftime, the Lions dominated, 32-23.

As NCC came back from halftime, they had figured out Dutchess's weak spots. They racked up 29 points in the third quarter alone. The Lions sealed the deal scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter, and holding Dutchess to only 6. The final score was 81-37, Nassau.

Victoria Mercado lead the Lions with a game high of 18 points and 11 rebounds. She was 5 for 11 from the field and 2 for 3 from the 3-point line. Kashianna Wynter finished with 16 points, shooting 58% from the field. She tallied 6 assists and 4 rebounds, as well. Nicole McCann also came in with 16 points and 3 game changing steals. Samantha Capobionco racked up 8 points and 11 rebounds. Niyah Ellis lead the defense with 11 blocks, 9 rebounds, and 8 points total. Renee Best and Dalhy Cianni were both key players helping to bring a scrappy energy and tough mentality to the court by snagging loose balls and capturing important rebounds.

"I believe we have really started to gel as a team and find our groove" stated Head Coach Brian Kuar after the game. "The women have put in a lot of work up to this point. It will be good for them to take a short rest for finals and the holidays, and come back refreshed in 2018 ready to tackle whatever comes our way."

The Lions will take a short break over the holidays, and be back in action in the new year starting against conference rival Kingsborough Community College on January 4th.
