(Trenton, NJ) After a difficult loss to Brookdale Community College, the Lions traveled to New Jersey to face the Mercer Vikings in a double header.
In game 1, Mercer took the lead 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning. Their defense kept the Lions from being able to score. In the bottom of the 5th, the Vikings opened up their lead pushing in 5 runs. Mercer came out on top 8-0. Although Nassau committed 6 errors, Pitcher
Geena Fornataro successfully truck out 5 batters.
Moving on to game 2,
Jordan Acritani hit a hard single to 2nd base to get established on base. It was looking promising for the Lions, but they just couldn't execute to get on the board. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd where Mercer squeezed in 3 runs. They managed to do the same thing in inning 3, to put them ahead 6-0.
Sabrina Fernandez hit a single to left field in the bottom of the 5th and attempted to stir some momentum, but it wasn't until the bottom of the 7th, when the Lions were in their final hour, that
Geena Fornataro hit a home run. The final score was Mercer 6, Nassau 1.
Post-Game, Head Coach
Kristine Abrams commented, "This has been a difficult end of the regular season for the women. We have had a grueling schedule this year, and it has taken a toll on some of them. But I know it has built them up to be better players and competitors. I'm really excited to see what a few days rest will do as we prepare for the playoffs next week."
The first round of the Region XV Softball Tournament starts on Saturday, April 28th in Valhalla, New York. The Lions will face Dutchess Community College.
