Women's Soccer Continues Win Streak with Rival Suffolk

Women's Soccer Continues Win Streak with Rival Suffolk

(Garden City, NY) Last Thursday the Women's Soccer Team hosted Suffolk Community College on Mitchel Field. It was overcast, but Nassau was more than ready for this game, as the longtime rivalry between the Lions and Sharks fueled their excitement.

In the first half, Maya Jones scored the first goal for the Lions in the 24th minute. Jones was assisted by Nathalie Garcia. Although Suffolk came out strong, NCC played scrappy defense and held the Sharks scoreless. Maraya Jones made a phenomenal save early on to boost the teams confidence and give them the extra edge they needed to dominate Suffolk. In the 32nd minute, Diana Lemus booted a ball assisted by Nataly Ramirez into the back of the goal to put the Lions up 2-0.

As the second half progressed, NCC kept the pressure on. In the 56th minute, Kristen Carbajal sealed the Sharks fate when she scored with a header off of a corner kick from Lisa Maybie. The Lions were victorious 3-0.

Goalie Maraya Jones had a total of 11 saves in net. Diana Lemus was another outstanding player of the game as she continued to control the center of the field and create scoring opportunities. Brienna Sullivan stood strong and lead the Lion's defense.

Head Coach Chris Megaloudis commented after the game, "Suffolk out-shot us having 20 shots on goal and they never stopped working for the entire game. However, we capitalized on the opportunities that were created by putting three goals in the back of the net and making those opportunities count. I'm really proud of our women."

Nassau hasn't lost to Suffolk in four seasons. They will see the Sharks again on October 11 in Selden, New York for another battle.
