(Herkimer, NY) The Nassau Women's Soccer team competed in their first game of the 2019 season today against nationally ranked #8 Herkimer Community College.
In the first half, Goalie
Eolyn Carbajal had multiple key saves. Unfortunately, there were a few banged up Lions, including
Kelly Fogarty who suffered a head injury and had to sit out for the remainder of the game. The Lions closed out the half scoreless, with the Generals up by 2.
Nassau started off the second half strong scoring 2 goals in 10 minutes to tie things up.
Shonagh Cleary scored the first goal and assisted
Erika Lilli for the second. The Lions couldn't keep up the tempo and Herkimer out scored them. The final score of 5-2.
"It was Shonagh's goal that invigorated the team to be confident and go for the net for that second goal." Commented Head Coach
Chris Megaloudis. "I think we did exceptionally well for our first game together. It takes time to figure out how to gel with each other and this game has given us a lot of hope for the rest of the season."
It was a great season opener for the Lions. Next up are the Mercyhurst NE Saints tomorrow in Herkimer, New York.
