(Rochester, MN). The Lions enter the game with tired legs and the daunting thoughts of what was happening back in Long Island with the Covid-19 virus. In addition they took the court and faced a fresh Mohawk Valley team who had a bye into the second round. The Lions played a very hard game the night before against the Montgomery Mustangs, but the lions never say die attitude made this one of the closest game the hawks played all year.
The first half was a back and forth battle that the Lions seemed to be in charge of. Thirteen minutes into the first half the Lions held an 8 point lead lead over the MVCC Hawks, 27-19. However, the well-rested Hawks woke up and rallied back outscoring the lions in the last 7 minutes 8-21. The hawks had a two week break in between their last playoff game and their second round game against the NCC team. Going into the half the score was 35-40.
During the second half the Lions found themselves trailing by double digits most of the game, at one point getting within 6 points , but never able to close the gap any further. Both teams got hot in the second half, scoring 58 (NCC) 61 (MVCC) points total far outshining their first half play. The game was not without its battles, the Lions committed 36 fouls and was fouled 24 times. The final score Hawks 101 Lions 93.
The game was not without it's shinning moments. When big games are played big people need to step up, and you don't get any bigger than our man
Patrick Gardner, 6'10 sophomore (6'11 with his hair). Pat made an outstanding 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Ahunna Okoko scored 13 points and had 6 rebounds along with
Sahdique Watkins who had 12 points and 3 assists.
Our hats go off to Coach Wynder, his team and his coaching staff for an incredible season and we wish the men that are leaving all of the best. A special thank you to all of those who supported the team throughout the season and stayed up to date here on Nassaulions.com. We will see you next year.
