Lions finish top 5 at the National Tournament
The Lions played the Anne Arundel Riverhawks in the 2021 NJCAA DIII Men's Soccer Championship Consolation. The winner would secure a top 5 final position in the Championship Tournament. Anne Arundel looking for a bounce back performance after they dropped their first game in the tournament to the eventual National Champions No.1 ranked Dallas-Richland while the Lions were also looking to bounce back after dropping a close matchup against the No.4 ranked Camden County. The game started off in typical lions fashion with offensive pressure by the forwards with facilitation coming through the midfield, this has been effective for the Lions all season as well as in this matchup when Lions forward Giovanny Morales put the Lions up 1-0 in the 6th minute with an assist from midfielder Jack Fridman. The Lions offensive pressure would continue and in the 31st minute they would add another goal coming from the foot of Rich Debrosse with the assist going to Irvin Blanco. The Lions would go into halftime with a 2-0 lead as well having 14 shots attempted compared to the 2 shots attempted by the Riverhawks. The second half is where the Riverhawks would attempt to mount their comeback when only 3 minutes into the second half they would get on the board to get the score to 2-1. The Lions would later respond in the 61st minute with a goal from Jairo Ulloa with the assist coming from Edwin Castellon. However with the lead now 3-1 the Riverhawks were not going roll over responding with back to back goals in less than a minute. The Riverhawks had tied the game up at 3. Both teams had successful offensive attacks with managing to get 13 shots a side. However the most important shot came in the 89th minute of regulation when Edwin Castellon assisted by Jephte Joseph put the Lions up one with less than a minute left in the game. The Lions would come out victorious with a 4-3 victory and placing them in the top 5 in the nation. Even though the Lions may have wanted to advance further in the tournament and compete for the National title it was great for the team to end on a high note.
