Lions Lacrosse National Tournament Recap

The Nassau Lions lacrosse team had an extraordinary season, marked by exceptional achievements and unforgettable moments. With a remarkable record of 13 wins and only 2 losses, the Lions showcased their dominance and skill throughout the season.

Building upon their reputation as back-to-back national champions, the Lions Lacrosse team entered the season with high expectations. The team's rich history and legacy served as a constant reminder of the standards they had set for themselves. With each game, they aimed to build upon what those had previously created before them.

The season unfolded with impressive displays of teamwork, resilience, and tactical prowess. The Lions demonstrated their ability to adapt to various challenges, securing victories against formidable opponents. Each win further solidified their reputation as one of the top programs in college lacrosse.

The Lions entered the NJCAA National tournament with a 12-1 record receiving the second seed and a first round bye, they were then set up to square off against a formidable Onondaga Lazers team in the tournament Semi-Finals. The two teams had played early in the regular season in which the Lions were able to best the Lazers by a score 12-9. With the Lazers looking for revenge and the Lions looking to go to their fifth straight championship final, a lot was on the line for both teams. The opening quarter only saw three goals with two coming from Onondaga and one coming from Nassau's James Hegel. The Second quarter also only saw three goals as well however Onondaga only scored once while the Lions were able to put two goals of their own up coming from Jared Morales and Kamryn Gill who was assisted by Thomas Mai. The score was tied up at three apiece going into half.

The third quarter saw Onondaga strike first however from there it was all Nassau as they scored four unanswered in the remainder of the quarter with goals coming from Thomas Mai ( Kamryn Gill), Jared Morales (Anthony Matalone), Charles Andrea (Brian Pohoreckyj), and Kyle O'Donoghue (Brian Pohoreckyj).

The Lions entered the fourth quarter by a score of 7-4, but the Lazers would not go down without a fight. The first two goals of the fourth would come from Thomas Mai (Anthony Matalone) and James Hegel (unassisted) before Onodaga would score themselves then Nassau would counter with their tenth goal of the game coming from Anthony Matalone (unassisted) bringing the score to 10-5 in the Lions favor. Onondaga would not go out easy as they made a push late in the fourth quarter scoring three straight however the Lions would be able to hold out and secure the 10-8 victory, punching their ticket to the Championship final.

The championship game was set between Nassau and Harford, it was a game of storylines as the Lions in 2021 had comeback and defeated Harford in a Championship final 2OT thriller to secure the National Championship and just last year after losing to Harford in the regular season were able to defeat them in the semi-final en route to winning back to back championships. This season Harford was the Lions only loss and here they stood again facing off once again.

Kamryn Gill, a standout player for Nassau, wasted no time in making his presence felt on the field. Gill swiftly struck the opening goal of the game. However, Harford responded with a goal of their own shortly thereafter, leveling the score. Harford gained momentum as they capitalized on a man-up opportunity. Nassau retaliated, with Brian Pohoreckyj finding the back of the net, courtesy of an assist from Anthony Matalone. The score was now tied at 2-2. Determined to maintain their advantage, Harford would then follow up with two goals leaving Nassau trailing 4-2 at the end of the first period.

Nassau displayed resilience in the second period, as Gill showcased his skills once more, teaming up with Thomas Mai to narrow the deficit to just one goal. However, Harford would convert on a man-up opportunity and manage to extend their lead to 5-3 at half.

The third period proved challenging for Nassau as Harford secured another goal but Nassau would not go out without a fight as Kyle O'Donoghue managed to find the back of the net unassisted, but Harford managed to go on a run. O'Donoghue would score again unassisted in the period as would Brian Pohoreckyj assisted by Kamryn Gill in the final minute of the third.

Nassau fought valiantly in the fourth period, with Thomas Mai assisted by Hogan Fox contributing a goal to try and mount a late game comeback. Nassau's Gill managed to score late in the game as well with an assist by Thomas Mai, but it was not enough in the end as Nassau would ultimately succumb to a loss by a final score of 8-13.

Despite the loss, Nassau Community College displayed determination and skill throughout the game. Their players demonstrated exceptional individual efforts, with Gill, Pohoreckyj, and O'Donoghue making notable contributions on the scoring front.

While the loss may have been disappointing to some, it should not overshadow the Lions' remarkable accomplishments throughout the season. The Nassau Lions' 13-2 record and their impressive journey serve as a testament to their exceptional talent and dedication. The team's impressive performance this season firmly add to the legacy of them as a force within the college lacrosse community.

As the season draws to a close, the Nassau Lions can reflect upon their journey with immense pride. Their legacy and their achievements this season have solidified their position as one of the premier lacrosse programs. The lessons learned from both victories and defeats will undoubtedly shape the team's future endeavors, providing motivation for continued growth and success.

Congratulations to the Lacrosse team both players and staff as we look forward with excitement to see what next season has in store.
Go Lions!
