The Nassau Community College men's soccer team defeated Suffolk County Community College by a score of 4-0 on Saturday afternoon to win the NJCAA North Atlantic District Championship and Region XV Championship. The Lions earn a bid to compete in the NJCAA National Championship the week of November 12th in Batavia, NY.
Nicolai Peralta was named the NJCAA Region XV Player of the Year, and head coach Dan Fisher was named the Region XV Coach of the Year.
How it happened
- Nassau and Suffolk traded shots for the majority of the first half until Juan Nunez was able to find the back of the net in the 39th minute of play. A corner kick from Matteo Kanakaris found the head of Nunez for the goal.
- Marc Augustin notched another goal for Nassau just minutes later to lead 2-0 going into halftime. Augustin finished on a through ball that split the defense from Joseph Lopez.
- Suffolk did not go down without a fight, taking five shots with three corner kicks in the second half.
- Christian Russo helped to secure the win for Nassau with a goal in the 80th minute assisted by Augustin, and Edwin Escobar scored the team's fourth goal in the last minute of play, assisted by Kevin Courtois.
- Nassau held the advantage in shots, 15-10, and corner kicks 8-4.
