Nassau Community College earned an 80–73 victory over Queensborough Community College on Wednesday night, improving to 7–6 overall and 7–4 in Region XV play. Nassau's dominant first half proved decisive as the Lions withstood a second-half surge to earn an important Region XV victory. Behind McBeth's shooting display and balanced contributions across the lineup, Nassau continued to build momentum as conference play intensifies.
How It Happened
Nassau came out aggressive from the opening tip, pushing the tempo and knocking down perimeter shots early. Glen McBeth Jr. scored 12 of the Lions' first 15 points, drilling four three-pointers in the opening eight minutes as Nassau raced out to a 22–9 lead. The Lions' ball movement consistently broke down the Queensborough defense, leading to open looks from beyond the arc and easy finishes in transition.
Midway through the first half, Nassau turned defense into offense, forcing consecutive turnovers that led to back-to-back threes from McBeth and a fast-break layup by Camren Welker. The run extended the lead to double digits, and Nassau continued to apply pressure. Isaiah Blunt controlled the paint on both ends, grabbing offensive rebounds that resulted in second-chance points, while Amir Reushell-Sander facilitated the offense and pushed the pace.
By halftime, Nassau had built a commanding 47–23 advantage, shooting 63% from the field and holding Queensborough to under 30% shooting. McBeth capped the half with his seventh three-pointer just before the buzzer, giving the Lions their largest lead of the night.
Queensborough regrouped after the break and made a strong push in the second half. Diego Cruz Lopez and Ernesto Gonzalez combined for several baskets in the paint as the Tigers increased their physicality and cut the deficit to 15 midway through the period. Nassau briefly stalled offensively, but Welker responded with a pull-up jumper and a three from the wing to halt the momentum.
In the final five minutes, Queensborough trimmed the lead to single digits and continued to apply pressure. Nassau stayed composed, converting free throws and getting key defensive stops. McBeth and Welker combined to go 10-for-10 from the line in the closing stretch, while Blunt secured critical rebounds to prevent second-chance opportunities. Despite the late surge, Queensborough was unable to get closer than seven as Nassau closed out the win.
