How It Happened
Nassau established control from the opening minutes and immediately began creating opportunities in the attacking third. Mohamed Alsayedi forced Westchester goalkeeper Mathaus Generoso into a save in the seventh minute, while Ismael Garcia and Kevin Medina followed with attempts as the Lions kept Westchester pinned back. Nassau also earned the game's first corner kick in the seventh minute, beginning what would become a 10-corner performance.Â
The pressure eventually paid off in the 26th minute. Raymond Zavala, who entered as a substitute in the 12th minute, stepped to the penalty spot and converted the penalty kick at 25:04 to give Nassau a 1-0 lead.Â
Nassau continued pushing forward after taking the lead. The Lions earned three corner kicks in a span of just over four minutes late in the half, and that sustained pressure led to their second goal. Kevin Martinez put a header on target at 38:27 that Generoso saved, but just three seconds later Martinez found the back of the net off an assist from Kevin Medina, doubling Nassau's advantage to 2-0.Â
The Lions entered halftime with complete control of the match. Nassau held a 9-0 advantage in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks through the opening 45 minutes while taking the 2-0 lead into the break.Â
Nassau's attack became even more active in the second half. Alexis Gomez forced a save with a header in the 53rd minute before Garcia and Josua Banegas each put shots on goal during a stretch of sustained Nassau pressure. Garcia continued to challenge the Westchester defense, forcing another save in the 66th minute, while Gomez put another attempt on target at 68:57.Â
Westchester finally generated its first shot of the game in the 48th minute, but the Nassau defense prevented the Vikings from mounting a comeback. When Westchester produced its best opportunities later in the half, goalkeeper Victord Lozano was there to preserve the shutout. Lozano stopped a header from Dydronald Aulibrice in the 74th minute and followed with another save against Jorge Altamirano less than two minutes later.Â
Nassau continued looking for a third goal in the closing minutes. Martinez forced another save in the 76th minute, while Edgar Velazquez and Christian Cabrera each put attempts on target late. Garcia also generated two more opportunities before the final whistle, but Generoso and the Westchester defense kept the final margin at 2-0.
