Nassau Community College women's soccer had a strong start to the season with an 8-0 victory over Kingsborough Community College on September 18. The Lions scored four goals in each half, controlled the match with a 25-2 advantage in shots. Nassau controlled the match from start to finish, receiving goals from six different players while generating 25 shots and 12 corner kicks. Diaz led the balanced attack with two goals and two assists, while Flaherty added a pair of goals and consistently pressured the Kingsborough defense with a team-high seven shots.
How It Happened
Nassau began applying pressure almost immediately. Antoinetta Flaherty forced Kingsborough goalkeeper Jessica Gonzalez into a save in the eighth minute, and the Lions earned three corner kicks within the opening nine minutes. That pressure paid off at 11:17 when Flaherty scored off an assist from Cindy Gutierrez to give Nassau a 1-0 lead.
The Lions doubled their advantage less than seven minutes later. Madison Galette, who had entered the match in the 14th minute, made an immediate impact by scoring at 17:58 off an assist from Ashley Diaz. Galette remained active in the attacking third, putting another shot on goal in the 24th minute as Nassau continued to control possession.
Nassau broke the match open with two goals just 50 seconds apart late in the first half. At 28:12, Diaz recorded her second assist of the match by setting up Gutierrez for Nassau's third goal. Less than a minute later, Diaz converted a penalty kick at 29:02 to extend the lead to 4-0. Nassau entered halftime with a 13-2 advantage in shots and a four-goal cushion.
The Lions picked up where they left off after halftime. Nassau generated three corner kicks and several scoring opportunities over the opening 10 minutes of the second half. After a Gutierrez shot was blocked in the box, Kingsborough was called for a handball, giving Nassau another penalty kick. Melanie Morsucci converted the opportunity at 54:27 to make it 5-0.
Diaz added her second goal of the match at 65:49, pushing Nassau's advantage to 6-0. Along with her two assists in the opening half, the goal gave Diaz six points for the match and put her at the center of four of Nassau's first six goals.
Nassau continued attacking down the stretch. After earning three more corner kicks, Kimberly Martinez Sanchez found the back of the net at 73:47 for the Lions' seventh goal. Flaherty then closed out the scoring at 80:00 with her second goal of the match, completing the 8-0 victory.
Defensively, Nassau gave Kingsborough virtually no room to create opportunities. The Lions allowed only two shots in the entire match and none in the second half. Gabriella Greco stopped the only Kingsborough attempt that reached the goal to secure the shutout.
