Susan Mitchell is the Coordinator of Wellbeing Programs and Intramural Sports at Nassau Community College.  She has devoted her professional career to the health and wellbeing of thousands of students, faculty and staff.  Her tireless efforts have led to the introduction of countless fitness, stress-relief and other programs that have advanced the stature of NCC in the community.

Susan was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York.  She earned her Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Brooklyn College and her Masters of Arts with honors from Adelphi University.

She is the proud mother of three grown successful children Scott, Erin and Kevin who were raised during her tenure at Nassau, beginning with their formative year in the Children’s Greenhouse.  She balanced work and family life flawlessly, seldom missing a child’s school program, sporting event or College activities.

Over the decades, Susan has nurtured, mentored and advised hundreds of students.  She is never too busy to help them with course selections, scheduling, time management, life skills and simply teaching them to be kind and productive members of the community.  For many their first job was working for Susan developing skills that helped them obtain student positions in the recreation field at their next school.   Susan never says “No” to anyone who seeks help or guidance and expects nothing in return.

Hundreds of  thousands dollars have been raised for organizations close to Susan’s heart including the Fun Run (Carleigh Mac Fund) for pediatric cardiology research, Love Run (MDA), Breast Cancer Expo and Walk (Mid-Nassau Lend a Helping Hand, Inc.), and the Day of Service for Last Hope Animal Rescue, Inc.  Susan is always there to motivate and encourage the community to do more to strengthen and support those in need.

Volunteering has been a constant part of her life, from her PTA membership, Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader . Susan was a member of the EWGA Rules and Etiquette and handicap committee hosting seminars for new members. This continued at NCC serving on the Children’s Greenhouse Board of Directors raising money thru plant sales and Classics for Kids.  Susan serves on other campus wide committees, including the NCC Health and Safety Committee, FSA Board of Director and others.

Susan is a certified Red Cross and Heart Association CPR/AED, First Aide and Aquatic instructor and has taught courses to our public safety officers, children’s greenhouse staff, faculty, staff and others both on and off campus.  Who knows how many lives may have been saved or accidents prevented? Many have reported how grateful they were to know what to do in an emergency.  She is also an adjunct professor in the HPER Department. Susan was instrumental in the creation of “The Kevin Shannon Memorial Scholarship” with a huge successful golf outing.  Kevin was a beloved member of the NCC administration.  The scholarship gives money to an NCC student who embodies Kevin’s love of music, English and golf.

In her spare time, Susan is an avid golfer and strong supporter of her children’s interest.  She remains a faithful advocate for her family, the NCC Foundation and the College Community.
