Men's Baseball Kicks off 2018 Season at Cal Ripken Experience

(Myrtle Beach, SC) The Nassau Men's Baseball Team kicked off their 2018 season on Spring Break down in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They played in the Cal Ripken Experience where they faced 4 different teams over the course of 2 days.

On the first day, they took on Genesee Community College. The game was scoreless until the 4th inning when Genesee took the lead by 1. The Lions did everything they could to respond, but weren't able to pull out the win. They lost 0-4. Highlights of the game were Freshman John Capozzoli who went 2-3 at bat, and Pitcher Anthony Pristera who through 6 innings had 1 earned run, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts.

Later that afternoon, the Lions faced John Wood Community College. Nassau started off strong getting a run in the first inning. But JWCC was able to pull off a triple with a few guys on base and snag 3. NCC had an excellent 2nd inning, scoring a total of 3 runs and allowing them to take the lead again, 4-3. It was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th where the Lions let the lead get out of their hands as the Trail Blazers racked up 7 runs. The final score was Nassau 4 - John Wood 14. Sophomore Brian Perez went 2 for 3 at bats with 2 stolen bases. Morgan McCarthy and Perez had a solid defensive game with a combined 4 assists.

The men came back on Saturday for revenge. To start the second day they went head to head with Westmoreland County Community College. Nassau scored consistently throughout the first 3 innings. They were up 4-1 by the 4th inning and the rest of the game was scoreless. The Lions came out victorious. Highlights of the game were Marino Sorbara going 3 for 3 while Mike Iacobellis went 2 for 3. Pitcher Andrew Williams went for 6 innings, earned 1 run and had 4 strikeouts. Vincent Worgul who came in for relief closed well with 0 runs and 1 strikeout.

As the Lions entered their last game of the tournament, they channeled their winning spirits towards Rockland Community College. However, Rockland had other ideas. They went up 7-0 in the first two innings. NCC fought back tooth and nail scoring in every quarter after. Unfortunately, it just wasn't enough. Rockland snatched up the win 14-4. Sorbara had a solid game going 2-2 and getting 1 RBI. Perez went 1-2. Mike Iacobellis had 2 RBI's, while Capozzoli had 1. Morgan McCarthy and Perez combined for 6 total assists on defense.

Nassau Men's Baseball will be back on Friday, March 23rd to take on Bronx Community College in the Bronx, NY.
