(Garden City, NY) On Sunday afternoon, the Nassau Women's Soccer Team hosted the Fashion Institute of Technology at Mitchel Field. It was the perfect 70 and sunny day the Lions had been hoping for as they prepared for one of their biggest conference rivalries for the second time this season. The Lions went in confident as they beat the FIT Tigers earlier this season 1-0.
The game was back and forth for most of the first half, until at about 20 minutes in when FIT was given a penalty kick after a foul in the 18 yard box. They got the kick and took the lead 1-0 for the rest of the half.
NCC came out powerful in the second half, scoring 2 goals in the first 3 minutes.
Maya Jones scored the first goal, while teammate
Diana Lemus scored the second. Approximately 20 minutes later,
Lisa Maybie took a free position from about 30 yards out and
Diana Lemus tapped the ball into the back of the net to put the Lions up 3-1. The only response FIT had was with about 20 seconds left, when they scored off of another penalty kick to make the final score 3-2, Lions.
Outstanding player of the game was
Maya Jones, who utilized her speed to score the first goal for the Lions and help kick start the Lions drive.
Diana Lemus was also an outstanding player. She scored 2 goals and won most of the 50/50 balls faced off in the middle. Her second goal came from a free position via
Lisa Maybie. Defender
Brienna Sullivan was notable by shutting down #6 on FIT's team. Goal Keeper
Maraya Jones stayed solid in the net, snagging all key saves.
Post game, Head Coach Megaloudis commented that, "We had an extremely well fought game on both sides. It was in the second half that I feel like we really found our groove and took complete control of the game. We just need to keep building week after week if we want to have a serious chance at the National Championship."
The women continue their undefeated status in conference at 4-0. The team will face Kingsborough Community College at home on Thursday.
