Women's Basketball Defeats Division I Monroe Mustangs

(Garden City, NY) On Sunday, the Women's Basketball Team hosted the Division I Monroe Mustangs at home.

In the first quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Lions by 2 points bringing the score to 15-13. But it was the second quarter right before the half where Nassau really found their groove. The Lions went on a 10-3 run, which put them up 36-29, going into halftime.

NCC struggled in the third quarter only scoring 5 points to Monroe's 17. As Nassau does best, they came back with a vengeance scoring 20 points in the 4th quarter and only allowed the Mustangs 12. Neck and neck, Ashley Barrett got an offensive rebound with 58 seconds to go. She kicked it out to Emily Pohalski who hit the winning 3 point shot. The Lions defeated the Mustangs, 61-58.

Outstanding student-athletes were Cherish Francis who scored 15 points and recorded 5 steals. Bobbi Green tallied 13 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 steals. Lindsay McBean had 11 points and 4 steals, while Emily Pohalski stepped up when the Lions needed it most scoring all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter. She also recorded 11 rebounds and 4 steals.

Head Coach Brian Kuar commented after the game, "I am just thrilled with the level of effort that we compete with! Our willingness to compete makes us a tough team to beat regardless of division. This was a tremendous win for our program. We are proud of the attention to detail our ladies are competing with. Our commitment to helping and playing for each other has us winning these key games."

With this victory against an 18-6 Division I team, the Lions are currently on a 10 game win streak. They look to continue this momentum into their match up on Saturday, February 16th against Orange CC.
