Women's Basketball Falls Just Short in Region XV Playoffs

(Bronx, NY) On Sunday, after defeating the Suffolk Sharks in the first round of the Region XV Playoffs, Nassau Women's Basketball played returning National Champions, Hostos Community College. The Caimans have won the Regional 4 times in a row and are back to back National Champions. But the Lions were confident as they previously beat them twice during the regular season.

In typical Nassau fashion, the Lions came out hot in the first quarter. They shot 48% from the field, which helped put them up 17-15 by the end of the quarter. The second quarter didn't go quite as smoothly due to missed shots and unnecessary turnovers. Going into halftime Hostos led, 35-28.

The Lions struggled in the 3rd quarter coming back from halftime. At one point they were down by 15 points. In the final quarter, Nassau took control and went on a 14-2 run and managed to tie the game at 58 with 5 minutes to go. The Lions were down by 2 with plenty of great looks to snag the lead, but were unable to convert. Unfortunately, this is as close as the Lions came to pulling out the victory. The final score was 72-64, Hostos.

Sophomore Bobbi Green had a total of 18 points, while teammate Giavanna Faison tallied 14.

The Lions finished the season 26-3 and 16-0 in conference. Outstanding individuals consisted of Giavanna Faison and Bobbi Green who earned All Tournament Team, while Sophomore Emily Pohalski was crowned with the All Region Sportsmanship Award.

Head Coach Brian Kuar commented after the game, "We came up short today. We got into some foul trouble, which I think is ultimately what held us back. We had extremely high hopes for this tournament run and every single woman put in such great effort all season. We will definitely be back next year for more!"
