Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Sports Information Director

Athletics are BACK!! The Lions Open with a Win

(Garden City, NY) Finally!!!! Months and Months of hard work, planning, precautions and dedication by the team, the staff, the administration and the county of Nassau, WE ARE BACK!!!

The sun was out, the spirits were high, and the Men's Lacrosse team took the field looking to pick up where they left off last spring before the pandemic hit.  Led by Coach John Savage, the team walked on to the field at 1pm at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex to take on Army Prep.

The men of Nassau were up to the task.

Controlling possession most of the game the lions opened the scoring late into the first quarter.  The Army Prep squad equalized not too long after, and it became a back and forth battle.  Ending the first quarter 2-2.  The battle continued into the second quarter, hit after hit, shot after the shot, the Lions went into the Half 4-2.

As they say, the game is made up of two halves, and it's the changes made during the break that decides the outcome of games like this.  Coach Savage must have turned the dial up to 11, because the Lions put their foot on the gas and never let up.  The Lions attack, became constant, never-ending and all out rush.  Transitions, starting from sophomore Goalie Luke Mignoli (20 saves) were on point.  In a constant discussion with the defense, Mignoli shut down the attack of the prep team, and ran point getting the ball up to the offense.

Finishing the game 10-6, The Lions offense was lead by freshman Patrick McAleavey, who finished the day with 6 goals.  Fellow attackman, Jack Pucci (sophomore), had 2 goals and 1 assist.  Matt Greaves (sophomore) got on the score sheet as well with 2 goals. Assists came from Tim Brockwell,  Sean Marklin, Vincent Deceglia, and Kali White Jr.

After the game I caught up with Coach Savage to get his thoughts.

"The kids waited a long 388 days to get back to playing the sport they love in a live game setting. They have overcome a bunch of adversity, like many others, and have showed great character and loyalty to the program throughout, it was special to get out there on the field with these guys again after all that has gone on within the past year.  It was also great to get our first win of the season and we will continue to learn and grow together"- Coach Savage

The lions will be back in action Tuesday April 6th as they take on the Long Island Rivals, Suffolk CCC.  We understand the frustration of fans not being permitted to the games, as we know how much lacrosse means to the Nassau community, Please continue to support the program and remember all home games will be live streamed on Nassaulions.com.
