How It Happened
Set 1 - Nassau 25, Monroe 14
Nassau wasted little time establishing control in the opening set. The Lions jumped out to a commanding 7-0 lead, highlighted by consecutive kills from Thomas Wildeman and Joseph Woods and a block from Wildeman and Johncarlo Rivera.
Wildeman continued to power the offense during the early surge, while Rivera added key points from the outside. A service ace from Wildeman extended the lead to 10-1, forcing Monroe to regroup. Later in the set, Brandon Barrios and Daniel Duran added offensive production, while Steven Mejia contributed a late kill to push Nassau toward set point. Duran then sealed the set with a service ace, completing the Lions' dominant 25-14 opening frame.
Set 2 - Nassau 25, Monroe 20
The second set featured more back-and-forth action early, but Nassau steadily built separation behind efficient attacking. Wildeman and Rivera delivered multiple kills during the middle portion of the set, while Woods added offense from the opposite side to maintain the Lions' lead.
After Monroe cut the deficit to 18-21, Nassau responded with clutch execution. Wildeman recorded another service ace, and Rivera finished a key rally off a set from Dom Cieleski to bring Nassau to set point. A Monroe service error closed the frame and gave the Lions a 2-0 match advantage.
Set 3Â - Nassau 25, Monroe 21
The third set proved to be the most competitive of the night, with Monroe briefly taking an 8-7 lead midway through the frame. Nassau answered immediately as Wildeman and Woods combined for key kills to even the score.
A pivotal turning point came when Cieleski delivered three consecutive service aces, turning a tight set into a 14-10 Nassau advantage and shifting momentum firmly back to the Lions. From there, Rivera and Barrios continued to convert offensively while Woods added another kill to keep Nassau in control.
With Monroe attempting a late push, Nassau closed strong. Cieleski added another service ace and Woods finished the match with a kill from Cieleski's set, while Wildeman capped the night with a final ace to secure the sweep.
