#5 Nassau Defeats #4 CCBC Essex

In a rematch of last season's NJCAA Championship semifinal, No. 5 Nassau Community College delivered a statement performance, defeating No. 4 CCBC Essex 12-6 on Saturday. The Lions used a dominant third quarter and balanced scoring attack to pull away from one of the nation's top programs.  In a highly anticipated top-five matchup, Nassau showed its ability to compete with top competition. The Lions' explosive third quarter, balanced scoring, and strong defensive play were the difference against No. 4 CCBC Essex. With the win, Nassau strengthens its position among the NJCAA's top contenders as the season progresses.

How It Happened

Nassau came out aggressive, controlling possession and generating quality chances early. Matt D'Aversa opened the scoring at 13:25 off a feed from Tim Navin, and Harley Finklestein followed with a goal assisted by Luke Hartman to give Nassau a 2-0 lead.

CCBC Essex answered late in the quarter with back-to-back goals from Luke Wojtech and Rob Andrews to even the score at 2-2 heading into the second.

The Lions regained momentum midway through the second quarter behind Tim Navin, who scored twice in under a minute, first off a pass from D'Aversa and then from Hartman, to push Nassau ahead 4-2. After Essex cut the lead to 4-3 on a man-up goal, Nassau responded just before halftime. Navin completed his hat trick with 13 seconds remaining in the half, finishing another Hartman assist to give the Lions a 5-3 lead at the break.

The third quarter proved to be the turning point. Nassau erupted for five goals in the period, breaking the game open. Jake Grimm started the run with a goal at 13:27, followed by an unassisted finish from Hartman to extend the lead to 7-3. Grimm struck again off an assist from Alex Kershis, and D'Aversa added another unassisted goal as Nassau stretched the advantage to 9-3. After Essex briefly answered, Grimm completed his hat trick with a man-up goal late in the quarter, giving Nassau a commanding 10-4 lead heading into the fourth.

CCBC Essex opened the fourth with a goal to cut the deficit to 10-5, but Nassau quickly responded. Alessandro Walaitis scored twice, once unassisted and once off a Finklestein assist, to push the lead to 12-5 and put the game out of reach. A late Essex goal brought the final score to 12-6, but Nassau maintained control throughout the closing minutes to secure the ranked win.
