Nassau Community College baseball jumped out to an early lead and held off a mid-game push from Suffolk to earn a 6-4 victory. Behind timely hitting and a strong complete-game effort on the mound, the Lions controlled the game from the start and secured the win at home.
How It Happened
Nassau wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first inning, erupting for four runs on five hits. Patrick Sebber started the rally with a single, and after a strikeout, Chris Lonergan drove him in with a double to right field for a 1-0 lead.
Moments later, Caiden Siegel delivered the biggest swing of the inning, blasting an inside-the-park two-run home run to extend the lead to 3-0. Nassau continued to apply pressure as Zaim Deljanin doubled and Michael Jazylo followed with an RBI single, capping the inning with a 4-0 advantage.Â
After a scoreless second inning, Nassau added to its lead in the third. Lonergan came through again, driving in a run to push the lead to 5-0.Â
Suffolk responded in the top of the third inning, capitalizing on a mix of hits and defensive miscues to score three runs and cut the deficit to 5-3. The Sharks added another run in the fourth inning to make it a one-run game at 5-4, putting pressure on Nassau's pitching staff.Â
Nassau answered in the sixth inning with an insurance run. The Lions strung together quality at-bats to extend the lead to 6-4, giving them breathing room heading into the final innings.Â
From there, Nassau's pitching took over. Dylan Cantwell settled in after the early trouble, limiting Suffolk's offense over the final innings. The Lions' defense turned key ground ball outs late, preserving the lead and closing out the victory.
