Brian Mangan was named Defensive Coordinator with the NCC lacrosse team in September of 2023 by Head Coach Karl Hedstrom and elevated to Associate Head Coach in September of 2024. Mangan and Hedstrom are no strangers to one another, serving on staff together at the New York Insitute of Technology from 2011-13. Before that stint, Coach Hedstrom coached Mangan in ‘09 and 2010, where Coach Mangan finished his career a 2nd Team All-ECC Selection and was named to the USILA All-America Team.Â
Coach Mangan is entering his second year at Nassau Community College. During his first year as defensive coordinator for the Lions, he helped lead them to a 9-3 record, finishing the regular season ranked #2 in the nation, where the Lions made the National Tournament, losing to the eventual National Champions in the Semi-Final. Coach Mangan’s defense finished 4th statistically in most defensive categories, leading the team to two shut outs and boasting 2 All-Americans.Â
During Coach Mangan’s tenure at NYiT, he was responsible for working primarily with the goalies and defensive personnel, working alongside Karl Hedstrom on defense, and helping bring home an IMLCA NCAA Division II Outstanding Coach of the Year award for Coach Hedstrom. He was also part of the staff that helped then-head coach Bill Dunn win two ECC Coach of the Year awards. Â
By the time his tenure was over, Coach Mangan had helped lead the Bears to a Top 10 Nationally Ranked Defense and the statically best Man Down Defensive unit in the country. He also coached 11 All-America selections, 22 All-Conference selections, 12 positional Player of the Year award recipients, including 2 USILA Longpole Midfielder of the Year award winners and 3 consecutive ECC Goalie of the Year winners. He also helped get NYiT back into the NCAA Playoffs for the first time since they won the National Championship in 2008.Â
Coach Mangan brings 20 years of coaching experience with him as he has coached various club teams on Long Island since 2004. Â
Coach Mangan graduated from NYiT in May of 2011, with a bachelor's degree in business administration after playing two seasons for the Bears in 2010 and 2011 and was named an honorable mention All-American in 2011 by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). He also earned All-East Coast Conference honors that season as well. Before his time in Old Westbury, Coach Mangan was a member of the Towson Tigers Men’s Lacrosse Team. He played play 2 seasons with the Tigers, where he appeared in 17 games, totaling 14 ground balls and 6 caused turnovers, and had his only collegiate assist against UPenn in the ‘08 season finale.Â
A native of Wantagh, N.Y., Mangan lettered in lacrosse for three seasons at Wantagh High School. He finished his high school career earning All-Conference on attack twice. He was a member of the 2005 Long Island Empire State team which won the gold medal. In his senior year, he was named All-Conference, All-County, and All-America honors as a defenseman. By the time he graduated, he was ranked among the all-time leaders in Wantagh High School history. He also played football for the Warriors. Â
Coach Mangan resides in Hicksville, NY with his wife Ashley. Â
