Nassau Community College is excited to announce the appointment of Christopher Harkins as the new head coach for the women's volleyball team for the 2024 season. With an impressive background in both playing and coaching, Coach Harkins brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to the Lions' program.
Harkins began his volleyball journey at Mepham High School where he was a three year captain, 1999 and 2000 All-County earning Nassau County MVP honors in his 1999 season as well as being the Nassau County All-Time statistical leader in assists per set and total assists. He then went on to Kings Point, where he excelled as a student-athlete, balancing academics with a standout playing career. His achievements include being named 1st Team All NECVA and earning NCAA statistical leader in digs per game in the 2001 and 2002 seasons. He earned the 2002 Defensive Player of the Year honor as well. After his collegiate career, Harkins transitioned into coaching, starting at Oceanside High School where he led the varsity team and pioneered an adult education volleyball program.
His coaching career continued to flourish with the founding of Long Island Surge Volleyball Club in 2015. Under his guidance, the club has grown significantly, now boasting over 200 players and competing in numerous tournaments across the tri-state area. His commitment to player development is evident in the success of his former athletes, many of whom have gone on to play collegiate volleyball.
We are confident that Harkins' leadership will elevate our women's volleyball program to new heights. His extensive experience in coaching, coupled with his passion for the growth and development of the sport as well as commitment to athlete development, makes him the ideal head coach.
Harkins holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and Geology from Hofstra University, a Master of Science in Literacy Education from Touro College, and a Coaching Certification in Volleyball from SUNY Cortland. His educational background and coaching credentials further underscore his readiness to lead NCC's volleyball program.
In addition to his coaching duties, Harkins has been actively involved in the volleyball community through various initiatives, including running intramural programs, summer camps, and personalized training regimens.
