(Seldon, NY) Last weekend the Nassau Community College Women's Tennis Team traveled to Seldon, New York to compete in the biggest meet of the season, the NJCAA Regionals! They competed against Suffolk Community College and Kingsborough Community College for all the glory one last time.
The matches were long, and drawn out - fierce battles to the end. Captain, Jessica Scalisi took on the undefeated Tamila Latif from Kingsborough in the first round. It was certainly a challenge, but Scalisi faced it head on to give Latif a run for her money. In the end, Latif came out on top, however Scalisi kept a positive attitude, and celebrated the excellent season she had.Â
Head Coach
Laura Gilbert commented during the meet that, "Jessica was the definition of a true team leader this season. I felt so fortunate to have such an uplifting and responsible individual on our team."Â
Next up was Alen Holsey who aced her opponent from Suffolk numerous times during the match! Despite her efforts, she lost 1-6, 0-6. Holsey made a tremendous amount of improvement this season, and the Lions are looking forward to watching her dominate as she returns to the court next season.
Anum Rafiq and Shirley Diaz each played singles against Suffolk. Their matches were heated, but they couldn't lock down the W. They both went out with a bang this year!
Finishing out singles, Tara Joyce had an impressive rally with Suffolk's Emily Portal. She was defeated 1-6, 1-6, however, she was determined to enjoy the game win or lose!Â
In the doubles action, Rebecca Ohlsen and Alen Holsey partnered well together. They were aggressive towards net play, as well as deep ground strokes out to the corners. Although the score went to deuce multiple times, Suffolk came out on top. It was a great run.
Despite the end of the season, the young team of Lions were proud of all they had accomplished this year, and were already looking forward to preparing for next season. All of the women will be back in 2018 ready to rumble!
