(Warwick,RI) Last Saturday, Lions Volleyball traveled to the Community College of Rhode Island Tournament. There were four other teams bringing some stiff competition, but the women were ready for the challenge.
Game 1 was against Bunker Hill. NCC took over from the beginning, and won handily in 3 matches, finishing 3-0.
Alicja Zaborowska lead the team in kills with 7, while
Genesis Zepeda was head of assists with 11. It was good to see Zepeda back on the court as she just came off of an ankle injury.
Building off of the confidence from Game 1, NCC faced the New Hampshire Technical Institute Lynx. NHTI put up a solid fight, but the Lions were just hitting their stride, and shut them down in 3 sets.
Alicja Zaborowska had a total of 9 kills, and
Genesis Zepeda finished with 23 assists.
On to Game 3 - the Lions met NHTI in the Semifinals. The Lions fumbled a little bit in the beginning - loosing a close second match, but they rallied, and came back to finish the game in 4 sets winning 3-1.
Kiara Tibbs came in with 17 kills, 3 block solos, and 2 block assists.
Genesis Zepeda tallied 34 assists, 2 block assists, and 3 kills. On to the Finals!!
NCC found themselves in the final round with CCRI. It was the fourth game of the night, and the Lions were starting to feel the wear and tear.
Genesis Zepeda's ankle was beginning to make its wear. The coaches decided to take her our in set 3, and replaced her with
Alicja Zaborowska as the setter for the time being. The two teams were back and forth, neck and neck, until the third set. You could see that CCRI really wanted the gold, and they played a little bit harder then NCC to get it. CCRI won 0-3.
Kiara Tibbs was back with 10 kills, 2 block solos, and 1 block assist.
Alicja Zaborowska finished with 8 kills and 4 assists.
It was an excellent effort for the Lions to capture Runner-Up. You can catch them live (online) next Saturday as they take on The Bronx Community College.
