Lions Tennis Battles It Out With Suffolk Sharks

(East Meadow, NY) On Thursday night, Nassau went up against Suffolk Community College at home. Suffolk has been dominating its opponents early in the season, and the Lions were looking to stop them right in their tracks.

In singles, Alen Holsey took on Michelle Hoffman. Holsey fought with her powerful and precise serves, but Hoffman took the win finishing 0-6 for both sets. Jessica Scalisi went head to head with a two-time All-State Champion, Gabby Hoffman. Scalisi battled long and hard for point after point. She ended 1-6 for both sets.

Continuing the singles matches, Shirley Diaz played hard and has been working on moving her opponent around the court to get her in an advantageous position. She showed impressive improvement today, however wasn't able to capture the win. She finished 0-6.
Tara Joyce competed in one of the longest matches of the day - in total lasting an hour and forty-five minutes. There were multiple fifteen minute rallies, but that couldn't break down SCC. The Sharks won 0-6. Joyce then went on to play doubles with Scalisi immediately after. They played with impressive vigor, however fell to SCC finishing 0-8.

Becky Ohlsen and Alen Holsey were the other doubles match of the day. Ohlsen guided the team, moving the opponent back with strong overheads, and drove the Sharks off the court with damaging volleys. They just weren't able to catch a break, and Suffolk took over 0-8.

"It was a tough loss for the girls today, but they all learned from their experiences which will only make them better for the next match. Even the Suffolk coaches and players mentioned to me how much more aggressively they are competing. I see this season as a team builder for the coming games and season. I'm incredibly proud of these ladies." stated Head Coach Laura Gilbert.

The Lions will be back on the court this Sunday to take on the FIT Tigers.
