Game 1
(Batavia, NY) If you were in attendance you either don't have any fingernails left, or you need to lie down. Today's game was one for the ages. Nassau took the field pumped and ready to play.
Ending the first quarter with a 2 goal lead, Nassau looked to be in control. But The dragons from Howard had other ideas. HCC went on to lead the lions at the end of the half as well as through the 3rd. Going into the 4th quarter the lions were down by 4 goals. It was through senior leadership, that Nassau pulled the dragons back to even. Late goals got the crowd roaring back to life and gave the team a renewed energy. With under two minutes the lions tied the game, with under 1 minute the dragons received a loose ball push call and went up 9-8. With around 40 seconds left #50
John Ehlers took the face off and won crucial position and with only a few grains of sand left on the games timer, The lions found the back of the net. This was the type of moment athletes dream of as little kids.
Once again #50 went to the spot and won what can only be described as the most important face off of the year. Lions moved into the Dragons territory and Coach Savage called a time out to draw up the plan. Parents, Alumni, Family and Friends all in attendance at GCC's lacrosse stadium, holding their breath. The whistle blows, the lions move quickly and shoot, just missed, lions retained possession. Lions restart the play, and #40
Justin Roderka gets the ball back left of the cage. He rolled around and caught a wicked hit, and still fought to get his shot off. From the ground,
Justin Roderka scored the Golden Goal putting Nassau into the finals.
Check back tomorrow for the conclusion of the tournament, as Nassau takes on rivals Onondaga at 4pm. If you can't make it, above this story is the link the the live feed.
Game 2
(Batavia, NY) With Mother Nature looking to be as uncooperative as possible, the Lions took the field against the Onondaga Lasers. Pouring rain and thunderstorms plagued the area all morning and early afternoon, however when the game time came, all of the bad weather disappeared. Nassau and Onondaga are two titans of Lacrosse and this game is one that will be told about for years. It was a defensive battle that showcased the true talents of the long poles and the Goalies. The score at the end of the first quarter was 2-2, and stayed that way all the way through to half time. There plenty of shots taken but some incredible saves made by
Gunnar Luckoski, kept the lions in great position to come away with win. The battle went back and forth the whole second half, a goal was almost always immediately answered by an opponent goal. Nassau very late in the 4th quarter scored one of the most incredible goals.
Justin Roderka scored behind his back on a pass that was delivered behind the back. It seemed as if it was the only way a ball would find the net was is nobody, including the shooter, was looking. It looked like the home team had the win, but a slip in the defense with 40 seconds to go, and a ball that was shoot through the OCC attackers legs evened the game. In over time, two missed clears turned out to be the undoing for the NCC team. Onondaga scored the golden goal, and Nassau finished an amazing seaon as national runners up.
