Nassau Community College earned a 76–65 win over Suffolk County Community College on Thursday night at the Physical Education Complex, improving to 6–6 overall and 6–4 in Region XV play. Behind balanced scoring, strong rebounding, and disciplined defense, Nassau controlled the second half and secured an important Region XV home win. The Lions continue to show progress on both ends of the floor as they head into the heart of conference play.
How It Happened
The opening half was tightly contested, with both teams trading baskets through the first 10 minutes. Suffolk briefly took a 16–14 lead, but Nassau responded with defensive pressure and strong rebounding to swing momentum. Glen McBeth Jr. and Camren Welker combined to spark a late first-half run, and Charlie Destefano's work on the offensive glass led to second-chance points as the Lions closed the half on an 11–4 surge to take a 35–31 lead into the break.
Nassau continued to build separation early in the second half. Matthias Martin scored twice inside during a 9–2 run that pushed the lead to double digits, and Giuliano Camporini knocked down a key three to extend the advantage to 51–42. Suffolk attempted to rally behind Kazmin Pensa-Johnson, who controlled the paint and kept the Sharks within striking distance, but Nassau answered each push with timely scoring.
With under five minutes remaining, Isaiah Blunt threw down a dunk off a Martin assist to make it 58–42, effectively sealing the game. Nassau maintained composure down the stretch, closing out the victory at the free-throw line and on late baskets from McBeth.
